Historic Controversy:
The Wright Brothers amazing accomplishment of achieving powered flight gave North Carolina recognition as being the first state to experience flight. However, North Carolina is not the only state to obtain recognition for Orville and Wilbur Wright’s accomplishments in aviation. The ongoing rivalry between North Carolina, the site of the first flight, and Ohio, the location from which the brothers built their world changing flying machines, has yet to be completely settled.
Dayton, Ohio also receives credit for the Wright Brother’s accomplishments in achieving flight. The town in which Orville and Wilbur grew up also housed their ideas and dreams for flight. The Brothers developed and built their designs in the back of their cycle shop in Ohio. They originally planned to test their designs in their own town, but later found that the weather conditions in Ohio were not ideal for testing flight (Wright & Bradshaw, 1996).
In search of a place for constant winds the brothers turned to the Outer Banks of North Carolina to test their experiments. Orville and Wilbur contacted the Weather Bureau and soon after traveled to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina to test their ideas. Kitty Hawk provided the Brothers with the conditions they were looking for, constant winds, privacy, and soft sand for landing. The Brothers continued to return to Kitty Hawk to test their ideas. The Brothers would return home to Dayton, Ohio to reconfigure their ideas and designs (Wright &Bradshaw, 1996).
Both states are proud to have taken part in the Wright Brother’s world-changing invention. Each state has acquired their own way to represent their contribution to the Wright’s success. Ohio has adopted the slogan, “Birthplace of Aviation” to compensate for the building of the aircrafts within their state. North Carolina has continued to represent themselves as “First in Flight,” for the obvious reason of being the location were the brothers achieved flight. Both states proudly represent their contribution to the Wrights Brothers' accomplishment by incorporating their slogans on to their state license plates.
