Reflection:
What new and interesting content did you learn through your Content Knowledge Project?
I learned a lot of new information that surprised me as I worked to complete my project. Going into the research phase of the CKP I half expected the majority of the content to be review from previous years in grade school studying N.C. and U.S. History. I was shocked to find out that was not the case. I stepped into a messy debate over which state should have “first flight rights” N.C. or O.H. Ideally I wanted to research more information on the states feud however; I had a hard time finding reliable sources on the topic. I also discovered more in depth content on how The Wright Brothers gained their start and what sparked their interest as young inventers. The most important piece of research I obtained why working on my project that pertained to N.C. History is why N.C.? I wanted to be sure to analyze and synthesize why the write brother chose Kitty Hawk, N.C. to test their experiments on flight. Overall I learned a lot about the Wright’s and their amazing contributed to N.C. History.
Explicitly share how the content connects with National and State Standards.
The content within my CKP on The Wright Brothers aligns with the Social Studies Essential Standard: 4.H.2.1 Explain why important buildings, statues, monuments, and place names are associated with the state's history.
By using the content within this project you can design lessons integrating the Science and Social Studies State Standards along with the Reading/Language Arts and Mathematics National Standards. When incorporating Science I would have students build and experiment with paper airplanes. I would integrate Reading and Language Arts by having students read texts and write from the Wright Brothers point of view. Mathematics could also be incorporated by having student measure and convert the distances the Wright Brothers flew while experimenting with powered flight. There are so many possibilities to integrate a variety of National and State Standards when working with the Wright Brothers Constitution to N.C. History.
Communicate how what you learned from creating the project will be of value to you as an elementary social studies teacher.
The information I have learned from creating this project is priceless. I know possess a higher understanding of the Wright Brothers Contribution to North Carolina History. I can use this in my classroom to teach 4th graders about N.C. History and how the Wright Brothers accomplishments pertain to our states history. I also like how the Wright Brothers is a well diverse topic that can be integrated into a variety of subjects anywhere from Language Arts, Science, to even Mathematics.
How would you teach a child about your topic?
I would teach my students about the Wright Brothers accomplishments and the relativity to N.C. History through Science and Mathematics. This way students can relate the information content to hands on experiments (science) and computations (mathematics).
Lesson Plan Idea related to Content Knowledge Project:
For my lesson plan I would have student design their own paper airplanes (as the Wright Brothers designed their plane) after discussing the Wright Brothers significance to N.C. History. Then student will be divided into groups to work together to figure out how far their various paper airplane designs will fly. Student will make predictions and measure distances. (Integrating Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics.)
